How pets make your life better

Have you ever looked into a pair of eyes and just saw love in its purest form? That’s what I experience every day when I wake up and gaze at my baby Gracie’s half-sleepy eyes.

As per our usual morning routine, she drowns my face in wet kisses (#SkinCare #Hilamos). Gracie certainly made my life better, as I’m sure all pets do.

It’s like God created pets to give us furry cuties to love and be loved by.

I first met Gracie on August 31, 2020. It was the middle of the pandemic, and my mental health was starting to become shakey. I was anxious about the semester and the overloading of coursework that occurs.

Jeff video chatted with me, asking me if I wanted a puppy. Of course, I badly wanted one, but my mom had a strict “No Pet” Policy. Yet, he told me that “the puppy” was a gift.

My heart melted when he showed the tiny, fragile white bundle of fur that was cradled in his arms.

It was love at first sight, and I knew that I would try to take her home no matter the cost.

So we devised a mission impossible plan to get the puppy in the house. She was so small, she could fit in a black tote bag back then! I met with Jeff, took the “bag,” and immediately ran to my room.

When she got out, she immediately pooped on my bed. I laughed and let her smell my hand. She licked my hand and kissed me after doing so! It was then I knew that she was mine and I was hers.

It’s funny how she’s my pet, but she owns me more than I own her.

For such a tiny baby, Gracie takes up a huge space in my bed and heart.

Despite being sunk in the deep waves of depression, I had a purpose as the semester went on. I had to get up every day. I had to feed her, clean her, and make her drink water. The moment I accepted her is the moment I promised to always take care of her. She’s my responsibility, and while it’s not always easy, she’s worth it.

I’m not the perfect owner, but Gracie accepts me and teaches me that you unconditionally give your all in love.

She’s more than a pet. She is my soulmate. Gracie is the love of my life. On the days when my skies are the darkest, she’s the only light I depend on.

Pets of any breed, size, or age are cute and cuddly. However, we have to remember their purpose in our lives goes beyond being just cute models to post on Instagram. They are our liabilities.

Pets depend on us for their lives.

We are their whole world. The acts of buying food for them, giving them warm shelter, and taking care of them are a small price to pay.

Having a pet is the best feeling in the world. If you have one, go and hug your furbabies. Give them a treat- not for any tricks, but for simply existing and loving you with all their hearts.

If you don’t have one, this is a sign for you to adopt one at your nearest local shelter! #AdoptDontShop!

The following are the animal shelters I know that you can connect with for adoption:

Philippine Animal Welfare Society

Animal Rescuers Manila Society

Strays Worth Saving

Pawssion Project PH

I swear, adopting a furbaby will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Take it from Gracie and me.
