21st-Century Films That Will Become Future Classics

The 21st century is the age of advancement. Not only of technology but also of culture and values that will leave the future a lot of great legacies. One of which are great films. Every year, we produce a number of movies, some may be bad and some may be good. But some may also be spectacular and will surely not be forgotten with time.

Such films are those that will get you into a rollercoaster of emotions or just an absolute mindfuck. But what they all have in common is the satisfaction the audience feels after watching such a great movie. Spending your most valued time watching a really great film is such a fulfilling sensation. And these movies will surely give you that experience.

21st Century Films that will Become Future Classics

  • Interstellar (2014)

A sci-fi masterpiece, one of the greatest films ever made. This film will blow your mind with its brilliance in reliving science and its genius. It will also pull your heartstrings and make you feel a lot of strong emotions throughout its 3-hour duration. The plot is about scientists searching for another inhabitable planet as the Earth is dreading its end.

Contrary to the popular belief that this film is “not for everyone” or that it is “hard to understand,” this film may feature complex elements of science but it still conveys the message that it wants the audience to understand with confidence. I remember being on edge for the entirety of its 3-hour duration as it was interesting in every frame. For someone who struggles with a short attention span, this film made me crave more even after the whole 3 hours it was on screen.

I personally do not see any other sci-fi film to rival such meticulous work by the one and only Christopher Nolan. Nolan was insane for this and no amount of artistic insanity would rival him, even after a thousand years.

  • Parasite (2019)

This award-winning Korean film will go down in history as one of the greatest references for social inequality representation and is seen to be relevant for years to come. The reality of the world revolves around the capitalist-driven society thus, this film made a really huge impact on the viewers.

The way this film showcased social class and its inequality was brilliant at its core. It displayed human tendencies fueled by unequal life circumstances. It was like a comparison of two different worlds of different cultures merging with one another. Parasite will teach us so much about life, its values, and its reality. No wonder it received a standing ovation from the Hollywood scene.

  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

One of the most aesthetically-pleasing cinematography I have ever seen in cinema. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French romantic film set in the late eighteenth century. It portrays romance shared by two young women named Marianne and Heloise. Marianne is a painter commissioned to do a wedding portrait for Heloise, a reluctant bride-to-be. However, as these two souls meet and start to spend time together, things would turn out to have a more symbolic meaning depicting love and its pain. This film is pure art at its core and most certainly would be part of the classical references in the future.

  • Hereditary (2018)

Not your typical jump-scare-induced horror film. This film will scare you with its brilliant display of strong human emotions and disturbing events. Hereditary features a family suffering from dreadful circumstances, with each having their own psychological struggles. It has a fair share of gore throughout its entirety, but not too much that it overpowers the disturbing factor of the film. It is captivating in a sense that it will put you at a major unease but will also keep your eyes glued to the screen.

Ari Aster, the mastermind behind Hereditary, established a level of true horror that captures the audience’s emotional connection to the story and its characters. Not only central to the common horror edge that most people know. It is what makes it unique and that’s why this has to go down in modern history as a classic.

  • The Machinist (2004)

A silent, slow burn psychological thriller drama featuring the one and only Christian Bale. Bale plays the role of Trevor Reznik, a factory worker who struggles with severe insomnia which made him extremely underweight and mentally unstable. One day at work, he unintentionally injures a co-worker which would disturb him even more. As the story unfolds, we will witness the psychological torment of guilt and a gut-wrenching revelation of Trevor’s strange thoughts and actions. It is haunting. It is disturbing. And it is strikingly impressive.

Not to mention Christian Bale’s insane dedication to his character’s physique. He lost so much weight to achieve the body of a man who hasn’t slept in a year that his director feared for his health.

And that’s a wrap!

If you haven’t seen all of these films yet, well, you should. They are already modern classics at this point and you’d be missing out if you don’t check out these amazing 21st-century films.
