Breezing through Valentine’s Day the Single Way
February is the month of love. And we celebrate what kind of love? Definitely not exclusive to the romantic kind. And Valentine’s Day is for everyone who loves and is loved.
Now, although we know that this day is well-celebrated among lovers, it doesn’t mean single folks can’t go and make this day their own too.
For most, Valentine’s is just another (work) day (where my single people out?). It comes and it goes. But this is no time to sulk and be lonely. Let’s turn this whole sad stuff around and make the most out of this day for our single selves!
This one is for all my single folks out there. Here are things Single people can/do to celebrate Valentine’s in their own way.
1. Sleep and rest
Valentine’s Day ain’t no holiday, but surely it is a day you can spend relaxing and dare I say, sleeping. My goal isn’t to lecture you about the benefits of sleep, but still, there you go. Do you know what the best part is though? You got the bed all to yourself! You got no date but at least you have your bed.
2. Finish up work
Still got a lot on your plate even on heart’s day? While everyone is out there dillydallying, use your time for finishing up unfinished tasks and school/office work. With the ongoing crisis, don’t you think it is best to stay at home anyway? Places would be crowded and you wouldn’t want to be there (definitely not me).
3. Watch your favorite movies/series
If you are single, and also a movie enthusiast like me, what better way to spend the day than by binge-watching your favourite movies? Or catching up on the latest episodes of your favourite series? I got you, bestie. This is your sign to watch them all.
4. Read a good book
What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than to revel in the love stories that will never be yours? Nothing like a good day spent reading a good book, or so they say (actually mostly me). Kidding aside, I personally prefer fictional characters over their real-life counterparts. Which one do you prefer?
5. Hang out with your equally single friends
Valentine’s Day is fun when you’re not the only single folk in your squad! This pandemic may have hindered a lot of our personal interactions with our friends, maybe for today, we can make an exception.
6. Treat yourself
Why would you need someone to treat you right when you know that you can treat yourself best? Sounds a bit bitter, but not if you’ve mastered the art of self-love and prioritizing yourself first. Give yourself some love by going to spas, finally getting that haircut, eating on a buffet, and buying new clothes that make you feel confident. Do the little things you owe yourself for putting others needs before yours. This is your day!
7. Spend the day with your family
Nothing is stronger than love from family. If you’re living away from your parents, this may be the perfect time to visit them. Have dinner, go on game night or watch movies together.
Valentine’s Day is for celebrating love and everything that goes along with it. Yes, even the pain and the disappointment. A day is not enough, but use this time to think and be more conscious of yourself. Loving oneself starts from accepting one’s imperfections.
Don’t rush to be in love. It isn’t a race. For it is better to be single than to be in a relationship when you’re not ready.
With all that being said, don’t forget to celebrate Single Awareness Day on February 15 too! Let us know what you did today in the comments below.
"Leanne or LJ -- as what her friends would like to call her-- is a walking enigma. She loves reading books more than going out, but would if her family drags her out. The limelight was never her spot, and if you look hard enough, you'll find her in a corner enjoying her peace in the shadows of other people's light.
