Overrated or Underrated? Study Habits

We all have that hack that we learned way back which helps us to do better when studying. Mine is playing classical music on low volume and spraying my favorite perfume when exam season is just right around the corner. There are tons of study habits out there that have been praised way more than they deserve.

Here is a list of some study tips I’ve done before and let me tell you my rating for all of them!

POMODORO TECHNIQUE

Pomodoro technique is not an entirely new method however is gaining popularity through the social media accounts of users. People on TikTok have been recommending this study habit relentlessly. The idea is that you choose a task and work on it for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break after the timer.

Basically, the main point here is time management. If you can manage your time accordingly without getting distracted, the Pomodoro technique might work for you. Having said that, I have come to the conclusion that this study habit is OVERRATED. It’s not efficient for everyone yet too many people keep on trying because of the hype that surrounds it. Don’t force yourself on a method that you know won’t work for you.

FLOWTIME TECHNIQUE

You’ve probably done this but you have no idea what it is called. The Flowtime technique is a study method quite similar yet different from Pomodoro. What you do here is choose one task to focus on and just take breaks when you feel the need to. You don’t have to force yourself to be interrupted by a strict time frame.

We don’t put much appreciation towards the Flowtime method! It’s so UNDERRATED that people don’t even know they’re already doing this. After all, the best productivity technique is personalized. You shouldn’t confine yourself with restraint when studying itself is already binding.

CRAMMING

I’m embarrassed to even call this a studying habit. However, I won’t deny that even I have been using this for quite some time now. It’s a habit that I know I have to stop but it just feels so thrilling and fulfilling. Cramming is seriously OVERRATED and we need to stop. While it might work well on others like myself, I don’t advise anyone to do this.

Cramming is a bad habit to develop. We need to learn how to manage our time efficiently so that we won’t stress out too much about deadlines. While it may be effective, it should be avoided for the backlash it may cause in the long run.

MIND MAPPING

I couldn’t stress enough how effective mind maps are if students just learn to appreciate this method! Mind maps are so UNDERRATED! There aren’t many who use this for note-taking when in fact it’s one of the most efficient and less time-consuming. While not as popular as other studying habits, mind mapping is actually proven to be more effective than other conventional techniques.

The centrifugal approach to ideas rather than a linear one makes learning fun and more comprehensible. Since you get to see how each branch is related to the focal point, information absorption is easier. If you haven’t tried learning through mind mapping, you’re completely missing out!

You’re never too late to learn. It’s better to establish study habits that will benefit you in the long run. While it may be difficult at first, it’ll be easier once you grow better at it. After all, studying is not a one-size-fits-all process. You are halfway there if you believe you can accomplish it.
