In 2012, the Miss Universe Organization ended its ban on transgender contestants by finalizing a policy that allowed transgender women to participate in all its competitions. However, the recently crowned queen still faces controversy for being part of the prestigious beauty pageant. A few local celebs have expressed their thoughts on this matter.

Just recently, Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 Winwyn Marquez shared that she is not comfortable with a transgender woman joining the competition. In an interview she did with entertainment website PEP, the beauty queen emphasized that although she has nothing against transgenders, she still thinks that the Miss Universe competition should be exclusive for natural-born women.

Marquez also referred to Miss International Queen – an international pageant for transgender women – stating that it might be better for them to join this instead.

Although Marquez expressed that she will still support the decision of the Miss Universe Organization regarding the participation of Angela Ponce, the Filipino queen still received backlash for her comments. Instagram user @korfilmlover stated that Marquez “offended many people because of [her] not so open minded opinion”. The netizen ended his/her statement by advising the beauty queen to “think before [she] replies”.

Winwyn Marquez was quick to respond, stating that “open minded people respect other people’s opinions”. The queen also reiterated that she salutes transwomen for being brave enough to share who they really are and that she will support the decision of the Miss Universe Organization, whatever it may be. She also rebuked the netizen for using a troll account just to comment on her Instagram account.
